Thursday 13 July 1967, the 13th stage of the Tour the France. British top road cyclist of the 60s, Tom Simpson fell down near the top of the Mont Ventoux due to a combination of heat, dehydration, amphetamines and alcohol. A helicopter took him to a nearby hospital but he died.
